Don’t miss this opportunity to read ten minutes of your prose** (short story, memoir, or novel chapter ONLY) to the audience, followed by a brief professional critique by the moderator. Only 8 readings per session; see below how to register.

  • Tuesday, April 10 — 6 – 8:30 PM at the Meyera Oberndorf Central Library in Virginia Beach. Readings will begin promptly at 6:15 PM. Shonda Buchanan, professor from the Department of English at Hampton University, will offer the professional critiques. NOTE: NO reading slots remain
  • DATE JUST ADDED:Saturday, May 58:30 AM – 11:00 (*NOTE EARLIER THAN NORMAL START AND FINISH), at the Meyera Oberndorf Central Library in Virginia Beach. Reading begins promptly at 9:45 AM. Dr. Bill Ruehlmann, professor emeritus of journalism/communications at Virginia Wesleyan College and book columnist for The Virginian-Pilot, will offer the professional critiques. NOTE: No reading slots left
  • Saturday, July 7 — 9:30 AM – 12:00, at the Meyera Oberndorf Central Library in Virginia Beach. Please enter the library by the back entrance since the front doors will be locked until 10 AM. Reading begins promptly at 9:45 AM. Michael Khandelwal, co-founder of the Muse writing studios in Norfolk, who earned his Master of Professional Writing degree from the University of Southern California with three theses: fiction, poetry, screenplay, will offer the professional critiques. NOTE: 6 reading slots left

    FREE and open to the public
    Anyone may listen as part of the audience, BUT if you want to share you work, registration is required. Registration is accomplished in two parts when you (1) email your work as a .doc or .docx file, and (2) when you receive confirmation that a slot is still available. When sending your work, please indicate the date of the event at which you would like to share your work. The reading spots are filled on a first come/first serve basis and are expected to fill up quickly.
    Document Formatting:
  • 12-point or larger font, Times New Roman or Courier only
  • 1-inch margins
  • DOUBLE SPACED, properly indented paragraphs, with no blank line left between paragraphs
  • Page numbers as part of the header in the upper right corner
  • Send no more than 4-5 pages of work; this is all that can be read at an understandable pace in the 10-minutes alloted to you. PLEASE PRACTICE READING YOUR WORK ALOUD and time yourself. We will stop you precisely at the 10-minute mark.Once you’ve emailed the work, please do not edit it anymore. You will need to read the file that you sent because it will be projected on a screen for the benefit of the audience. Any changes you make subsequent to emailing the file will create confusion for members of the audience and for the person running the laptop and projector (ME).Please bring 2 hard copies of your work, one from which you’ll read if you don’t want to read it from the laptop screen and one on which the critiquer will write.
